Camptothecin was originally isolated from the stem wood of the Camptotheca acuminata tree and was shown to exhibit antileukemic/antitumor activity, and reversibly inhibit Mitochondrial Topo I (nuclear Topo I (topoisomerase I)) by binding to and stabilizing the topoisomerase-DNA covalent complex.
