Picrolonic acid is a useful reagent for analysis of alkaloids, tryptophan, phenylalanine. May also used as a precipitant for organic bases (as alkaloids), in the determination of calcium, lead, magnesium, strontium and thorium, and for the isolation of amines as pi-complexes.
